Portion Distortion

TOPS NEWS 8-14-2014

Program

At the August 14 meeting of Imperial TOPS NE0267, Lorna presented a program titled “Portion Distortion,” which described how restaurant portions have grown over the years. Consider this:
  • 20 years ago, bagels were typically 3 inches in diameter with 140 calories. Today: 6 inches in diameter with 350 calories.
  • Cheeseburgers 20 years ago had 333 calories. Today? 590 calories.
  • Even turkey sandwiches have increased, from 320 calories to a super-sized 820 calories. You’d have to Turkey Sandwich NowTurkey Sandwich Thenride a bike for 1 hour, 25 minutes to burn off those extra calories. (The National Heart, Blood, and Lung Institute offers more statistics and quizzes to see how much you know about portion sizes and calories.)

Barb will present next week’s program, and Shirley will give the program on August 28.

Shirley was the best loser for the week. As an incentive, Karen distributed copies of the TOPS Journal, My Real Progress. The chapter will pay for the journals for those who lose weight from the first meeting in August through the first meeting of September.

Yes-Yes/No-No

The Yes-Yes challenge this week is to use the journal to keep daily track of food intake, activity, and moods. The No-No is no snacking between meals except for fruits and vegetables.
