Walk It Off!

TOPS News

At the September 18 meeting of Imperial TOPS NE0267, Shirley was the Best Loser for the week, and Lorna won a Kept-If-Off Award.

Week’s Challenges

The two challenges for the week are to eat an apple a day, and to add some extra or different exercise each day. 5 TOPS and 1 KOPS were present.
Karen asked members to bring suggestions for the October club motivational calendar. Cheryl distributed the updated bylaws.

Program

leslie sansoneArea Captain Mary Lou Beisner presented a program titled “Walking for Weight Loss,” ideas based in part on Leslie Sampson’s walking program. Here’s a link to a You-Tube 45-minutes “Walk at Home” Exercise.
Some advantages of walking: It
  • lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels,
  • prevents osteoporosis,
  • strengthens lungs,
  • decreases blood sugar levels,
  • increases serotonin levels, and
  • releases endorphins.
Suggestions for effective walking:
  • Buy a pedometer. It’ll make it more fun to walk.
  • Pick the right shoes (which should be replaced every 5 or 6 months if walking 30 minutes for 5 or 6 days a week)
  • Walk to music or with friends.
Diann will present next week’s program, with Cheryl scheduled for October 2.
TOPS Club meets from 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursdays at the Imperial Community Center, with weigh-ins beginning at 8:30. The first meeting is free.
